FHWA Sustainable Pavements Program

The FHWA launched the Sustainable Pavements Program in 2010 to advance the knowledge and practice of sustainability related to pavements. The overall objective of the program is to increase the awareness, visibility, and the body of knowledge of sustainability considerations in all phases of the pavement life cycle. Under that program, the FHWA has completed the technical resource publication “Towards Sustainable Pavement Systems: A Reference Document” (FHWA-HIF-15-002) ( http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/pavement/sustainability/ref_doc.cfm). This document, over 2 years in development, covers sustainability considerations in all aspects of the pavement life cycle, from materials, design, and construction and through the use, maintenance/preservation, and end-of-life phases.  Additional information is also included on  general sustainability concepts and sustainability assessment.   In addition, FHWA is now delivering a series of five webinars to help implement and promote key elements of pavement sustainability.

Over the next 5 months, the FHWA will be delivering a series of webinars to highlight the information contained in the recent publication “Towards Sustainable Pavement Systems: A Reference Document.” These webinars are each 2 hours long, and each covers a separate topic or series of topics from the Reference Document.  More information on the webinars is found in the flyer, which also provides links to enable you to register for each of the five events. The schedule for these webinars is summarized below.

  • Webinar #1, Wednesday April 29 (1-3 pm EDT)
  • Webinar #2, Tuesday, May 19 (1-3 pm EDT)
  • Webinar #3, Thursday, June 25 (1-3 pm EDT)
  • Webinar #4, Thursday, August 20 (1-3 pm EDT)
  • Webinar #5, Wednesday, September 9 (1-3 pm EDT)
