CESTiCC introduces Kids2College students to the world of sustainable transportation infrastructure

Outreach Coordinator Joe Alloway and Research Coordinator Sheng Zhao presented the world of transportation to two 5th grade classes from Tok and Delta at the annual Kids2College event. The lesson introduced the students to some of the distinct challenges civil engineers face in cold climates such as Alaska and challenged them to think creatively about transportation infrastructure. The students gave lots of very good and creative suggestions for how we should address challenges such as thermal cracking and frost heave in our roads. After the class, Dr. Zhao took the students on a tour of our pavement lab and explained the basic process of road design and construction.
