Abstract

This presentation includes an analysis and evaluation of the mortar and pervious concrete with fly ash as a sole binder. The chemical activators and graphene oxide were chosen in this project to improve the overall performance of mortar and pervious concrete. A scheme of Uniform Design of experiments was used to investigate the effects of admixtures, chemical activators on the performance of fly ash binder. Microscopic investigation was also conducted to obtain more insights on the functions of graphene oxide and chemical activators in the fly ash binder. By adopting the chemical activation and graphene oxide modification at room temperature, test results show the fly ash pervious concrete is comparable to the cement pervious concrete with the desirable density, void ratio, strength, infiltration rate and durability.

Gang Xu photoGang Xu is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Washington State University. Mr. Xu received a M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alaska in 2009. He is also a Professional Engineer registered in California. Mr. Xu worked for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities as a bridge engineer for four years. His research interests include sustainable and innovative concrete materials, nanomaterial application in building materials, structural engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering and bridge health monitoring. His research at WSU focuses on the development and properties testing of hydraulic concrete mixes that use the pure fly ash and other industrial wastes or byproducts and the nanomaterial application in “green” pervious concrete pavements. He is a recipient of J.F. Osborn Outstanding Graduate Student award, Russ and Anne Fuller Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Research and Perteet Graduate Fellowship in Civil Engineering in 2016.  He has published over 10 papers in journals and referred conference proceedings.  He also holds 2 provisional U.S. patent applications.
