Abstract

Determining a proper winter road maintenance treatment for a given winter event is extremely important, from both economic and transportation sustainability perspective. This talk provides an overview of current winter road maintenance practice for highways, city roads, and parking lot and sidewalk pavements. It presents a guide for selecting an optimal road salt application rate for specific weather, treatment and level of service requirement for the roadway. The talk also includes a discussion on the fundamental of pavement de-icing and anti-icing, which is essential in understanding and determining an optimal winter road treatment option.
