Two-Dimensional Modeling Using HEC-RAS and SRH-2D

March 1-2, 2017

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is conducting a study to compare two hydraulic numerical models used by engineers to help improve our understanding of flow conditions in the vicinity of bridges. These models are  a) the Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) developed by the  US Army Corps of Engineers, and b) the Sedimentation and River Hydraulics (SRH) developed by the Bureau of Reclamation.  Both of them are 2-Dimensional models, capable of simulating unsteady flow conditions.

The study is co-funded by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (AKDOT&PF) and the Center for Environmentally Sustainable Transportation in Cold Climates (CESTICC).  No direct training of AKDOT&PF hydraulic personnel was proposed in the current project.

A workshop on this project has been developed and will be presented as a 2-day workshop at the Fairbanks AKDOT&PF. The workshop will discuss the basis of each model and provide insights of the current project findings.  Specifically, the workshop will present the models and conduct hands-on exercises. Participants will learn how to approach and construct a 2D model for unsteady flow conditions, and to effectively view and analyze results. Electronic copies of all material presented during the workshop will be available after the workshop has concluded on the "Workshop Agenda and Materials" tab of the CESTiCC Workforce Development page.
