Mining Engineering Alum Receives SME Award

University of Alaska Fairbanks alum William Collingwood has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 Robert Peele Memorial Award from the Mining & Exploration (M&E) Division of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME (SME). The award is given for the best paper related to the M&E Division, published in an SME publication within a two-year period. The primary author must be an SME member not over 35 years of age.

Collingwood received his BS degree in Mining Engineering with a minor in Health and Safety from Penn State University, and graduated from University of Alaska Fairbanks with a master’s degree in Mining Engineering in 2012.

His paper, "CFD Modeling of Air flow in an Open Pit Mine", was published in the February, 2010, Vol. 64, PP. 44-50, in the Mining Engineering magazine.  The paper was co-authored by K. V. Raj, Abhisekh Choudhury and Sukumar Bandopadhyay (University of Alaska Fairbanks) and was the result of a research project entitled, “Ventilation of Deep Open pit Mines with special Reference to Air Inversion in Arctic or Subarctic Regions.” Professor Sukumar Bandopadhyay is the Principal Investigator of this five-year, NIOSH funded research project.
