UAF Steel Bridge team captures first place at Regionals
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Steel Bridge team showed an outstanding performance as they competed at the 2013 ASCE Pacific Northwest Regional Competition on April 27- 28, 2013 in Corvallis, Oregon. UAF captured first place overall in the Steel Bridge competition. In the individual categories, the team placed first in structural efficiency and stiffness, second in lightness and construction economy, and fourth in construction speed.
UAF also took first place in the Environmental Engineering and second place in the Transportation Engineering competitions.
UAF's success went beyond winning individual contests. In addition, the team received the General Excellence Award for the entire Regional Competition. According to team captain Pat Brandon, it was the first time a UAF team was bestowed with this honor. “This is quite impressive considering we did not participate in the concrete canoe competition. Because of our strong showings in the other events, we accumulated enough points to secure the General Excellence Award.”
The Regionals included a few fun based events as well, such a Transportation Photo Scavenger Hunt, Engineering Knowledge and Dodgeball. UAF did well in all of those placing first, fourth and third place, respectively.
The Steel Bridge team is now preparing for the National competition that will be held in Seattle on May 31 & June 1, 2013.
Team members include: Patrick Brandon (Team Captain), James “Tripp” Collier (Team Co-Captain), Robert Burdick, Mathew Chacho, Jordan Vandimeer, Daniel Hjortstop, Austin Dukowitz, Jacob Rahlfs, Petr Kosmin, Will Riley, Martin Gray and Richard Ward. Faculty advisors Wilhelm Muench and Leroy Hulsey assisted the team in their victories.
