Mining undergraduate student is awarded competitive scholarship
Congratulations to Simon Ortega (B.S., Mining Engineering) who has been selected as a 2012-2013 recipient of the McIntosh Engineering Scholarship by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME).
The McIntosh Engineering Scholarship is a competitive scholarship that is awarded every year to only six undergraduate juniors or seniors enrolled in a Mining Engineering program. The focus of the award is on underground mining.
While most scholarships are awarded solely based on academic performance, this scholarship required the submission of a technical paper in which the applicant discusses a known mining engineering issue. Ortega, who had successfully completed an internship at Kensington gold mine in SE Alaska last summer, put his recently acquired knowledge to good use and impressed the scholarship committee with his research paper on water engineering problems.
Simon will be recognized at the SME Foundation's Annual Dinner during the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Denver, Colorado, February 24-27, 2013.
